Cheers to friendships and futures: A reflection on my journey

Greetings! I’m Belovffy, previous co-chairwoman and current student advisor of Zero Plastic League!

To commemorate the establishment of the Zero Plastic League organising committee, I figured it would be a great time to reflect on my journey with ZPL, right before I step down from my position as Co-chairwoman.

2022-2023 has been a very eventful year for Zero Plastic League, we’ve organised three sharing sessions with students from GT, Sing Yin Secondary School, and International College Hong Kong, went to Wu Kai Sha beach for a beach cleanup, designed clothes for the Green Fashion Show at Sing Yin Secondary School, and many more. It’s wild to think about how, as a team of 10 secondary school students, we have done so much and come so far over the past year.

As the oldest member of the team, I feel like the most valuable experience I’ve gained from ZPL is the friends that I have made. ZPL offered me a great opportunity to break out of my usual social circle and make friends with younger students from lower grades. Although there have been some ups and downs, I’m still grateful for how the team has great synergy, and everybody is always here to support each other for work and emotionally. ZPL is truly the place where I got to understand the essence of leadership: not to boss around and allocate work to others, but to be consistently involved, be ready to support and offer help, and hold on to everybody in hard times.

I would especially like to thank our two other wonderful members Eric and Iain from Sing Yin Secondary School for being a part of our team in the past year. Having been a GT student since 1st grade, it was great to be able to gain some fresh perspective about other schools.

With Zero Plastic League growing and expanding each year, I’m glad to see how we have all grown through this process into leaders. As we welcome new members to the organising committee, I hope that not only will our core enthusiasm and devotion to the environment of our home be passed onto our newcomers, but also our spirit of unity and resilience against hardships.
