Plastics/People

So, it’s my turn to write a blog post for the website. While it’d be an option to discuss the wonderful moments I’ve had in the league and its surrounding projects, I’d rather do the opposite (in a positive way).

Sure, some people might think that I’m good at writing scripts, filming shots or editing videos, and I definitely am happy in creating things through all these opportunities, but after participating in the league and other projects, I’ve also discovered many shortcomings and problems of myself, and I’d like to share them right now, using the topic of plastics (and some song lyrics because I listen to a bit too much music).

“I’ve learnt love is like a brick, you can build a house or sink a dead body.”

Same for plastics - bottles can carry water when used, then pollute water when dumped - and for most things too. Everything can be a double-edged sword, and if treated in the wrong way, can cause harm to yourself. I enjoy projects like video-making, but when it combines with bad time management and procrastination, it means that I’ll delay things and be late, while losing balance and focus on more important things.

This is a problem that I’ve been struggling with for a long time (and still am facing), and it’s not uncommon, just like how excessive plastic pollution can bring more threat than convenience to our lives.

“I’ve never seen someone lie like you do. So much, even you start to think it’s true.”

When you realize something is harmful, the best thing to do is to acknowledge and admit it, and not to hide from it. When we realize plastics are extremely dangerous to our future, we should reduce the amount of plastic waste we produce, and the same goes for personal problems: I need to be aware of how severe my procrastination problem is, and know that I can do much more without it.

Having self-awareness is the first step for change, and this requires help from other people, like friends. In fact, one of the three aims of ZPL is Citizen Science, raising public awareness of plastic pollution.

“If I knew it all then, would I do it again? If they knew what they said would go straight to my head, what would they say instead?”

This lyric’s originally from a song about self-harm, but can describe other problems too. People that have the privilege of buying and using plastics, probably aren’t the ones that would directly experience the consequences of it. If we’re the ones that are directly affected by pollution, would we continue to buy many plastics?

If I knew how big of a problem my procrastination is, would I do it again? What would I do instead?

It’s important to reconsider past decisions and things after you’ve evolved and changed, after knowing what you did was wrong. Procrastination and time management are two of my biggest problems, just like how plastic pollution is one of the world’s biggest problems right now.

We should realize, recognize, and reconsider our wrong actions, and change for the better before it’s too late. I’m truly thankful for the opportunities that I have, both in ZPL and other places, in making me recognize my strengths and weaknesses, and I’ll try my best to improve myself, while creating better projects.

“There were pages turned with the bridges burned, everything you lose is a step you take. So make the friendship bracelets, take a moment and taste it, you’ve got no reason to be afraid. You’re on your own, kid.”
