As the human population grows significantly and industrial development skyrockets, the problem of climate change arises and forms a vicious cycle, which leads to negative impacts to the environment and the society. Recently, we have been told to perform 4Rs, reducing, reusing, recovering and recycling. However, not many people are aware of the issue thus not more than half of the citizens perform recycling. From the data resources these years, it is well known that global warming has increased in speed.
Apart from 4Rs, there are many other sustainable methods of combating climate change. They are easier to implement and bring effects sooner. Scientists believe that they will be the reflection of the 4Rs, but the more effective ones for the citizens to proceed.
First of all, buying less and preventing buying products with over packaging are the simplest ways to reduce the amount of wastes produced in landfills, which leads to reduction in methane emissions. This slows down global warming and thus impacts climate change positively.
Furthermore, buying local and seasonal food reduces the fossil fuels burnt for transportation and less carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Therefore, global warming is mitigated gradually.
Moreover, eating less meat and dairy products while more vegetables reduces the amount of greenhouse gasses produced because cattle rearing and paddy farming both release methane, which is one of the most abundant greenhouse gasses that contribute to global warming. Therefore, this action can effectively slow down global warming and combat climate change in a relatively short time period.
Last but not least, we should be able to choose the electrical appliances that have qualified energy efficiency labels. If they aren’t up to the standard, unless daily needs, we should reduce their usage as they lose energy to the surrounding environment and consume more energy and time to function than the ones that are qualified. Thus, this increases the amount of fossil fuels burnt and amount of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide released. This exacerbâtes the chaos of global warming.
In conclusion, humans on earth have to cooperate and perform the same sustainable action on preventing global warming thus combating climate change. We could not succeed if one of us forsake. The best thing we can do now is to do our ultimate best to slow down global warming while continuing our daily energy consumption and needs.
