Taking part in saving our oceans

Updated: Apr 24

Plastic waste, including single-use plastics and microplastics, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Research pointed out that about eight million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations every year. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world.

I am always passionate about protecting the natural environment, especially dealing with plastic pollution issues. As there is an increasing trend of sea creatures such as fish, sea turtles being harmed by plastics in recent years, I know it’s time for me to take action, to take part in saving our marine animals. Therefore, this year, I joined the ZPL family, aiming to make a difference to the environment.

Becoming one of the leaders of the beach clean-up event, I am responsible for

deciding the venue of beach clean-up and leading my teammates to check for microplastics as well as single-use plastics such as plastic bottles and plastic bags.

At 23/3 , I had my first experience to organize a pre beach clean-up event. Accompanied by the teachers, my teammates and I searched for microplastics and plastics in Sha Lam beach, Tai Po. Although the number of microplastics founded

was not as many as we thought, we still obtained sufficient samples for researches to go on. It was a fantastic journey and a spectacular experience for me.

Never have I thought of laughter and smiles along the trip, I was amazed by the ties between ZPL members. I just can’t wait for the next trip in April!

Regarding to plastic pollution, there’s a slogan I want to share. “Stop the pollution. Be part of the solution.” Together with ZPL, let’s change the world into a better place!
